U.S. Route 340 crosses the Potomac River into western Maryland and heads northeastward to its northern terminus in Frederick at its parent, U.S. Route 40. It has an interchange with Interstate 70 outside of the city, and its northernmost few miles overlap with U.S. Route 15.
