Interstate 295 north

This gore sign along exit 2 of Interstate 95/495 (Capital Beltway) in Oxon Hill, Maryland just east of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, points the way to northbound Interstate 295 (left) and the National Harbor complex (right) beside the Potomac River. Photo taken 04-30-2025.

I-295 north curves widely, turning a total of approximately 270 degrees, as it winds its way under and beyond the Beltway and several associated flyover ramps. Seen here are the ramps to and from Maryland Route 210 (Indian Head Highway) along the Beltway. Photo taken 04-30-2025.

As a long ramp from Oxon Hill Road reaches I-295 to the left, the highway's right lane ends in 2,500 feet, or just shy of half a mile. Photo taken 04-30-2025.

After 0.4 miles, a "END STATE MAINTENANCE" notation from Maryland's State Highway Administration marks I-295's entry into Washington, DC. Maryland has a welcome sign for southbound traffic near this spot. Photo taken 04-30-2025.

As it prepares for the loss of another right lane in 1,200 feet, I-295 has one-mile signage for exit 1, serving the U.S. Naval Research Lab along with southeast D.C.'s Blue Plains wastewater treatment plant. Photo taken 04-30-2025.

In half a mile, exit 5A on the left will lead to westbound Interstate 695 (Southeast Freeway) to downtown D.C. and Interstate 395, and exit 5B is the northbound through movement onto D.C. Route 295 (Anacostia Freeway) which is noted as leading to U.S. Route 50. Photo taken 04-30-2025.
