U.S. Route 301 south

IMG_3968_edited.jpg

At exit 147 along the tolled Delaware Route 1 in Biddles Corner, New Castle County, U.S. Route 301 begins its 1,100-mile journey to Sarasota, Florida. (6-4-2025)

Annapolis, the capital of neighboring Maryland, is 72 miles from this point. US 301 itself has been a toll road in Delaware since 2019, when it was shifted to this bypass of Middletown from a previous routing through Middletown, over the Chesapeake and Delaware canal, and out to U.S. Route 40 in Glasgow, which it partially shared with Route 896. (6-4-2025)

Exit 9 with Jamison Corner Road is a mile away. (6-4-2025)

IMG_3972_edited.jpg

US 301 curves widely to the right at its beginning. (6-4-2025)

IMG_3973_edited.jpg

Hyetts Corner Road passes overhead near the end of this curve. (6-4-2025)

IMG_3974_edited.jpg

This is designated as a First Responders Memorial Highway. (6-4-2025)

IMG_3975_edited.jpg

The highway then crosses Scott Run. (6-4-2025)

IMG_3976_edited.jpg

Exit 9 is ahead on the right. Each offramp along US 301 in both directions has their own electronic toll scanners. (6-4-2025)

IMG_3978_edited.jpg

US 301 receives traffic from Jamison Corner ahead on the right. (6-4-2025)

IMG_3979_edited.jpg

The next 9 miles of US 301 (to the Maryland line) are a deer crossing area. (6-4-2025)

IMG_3980_edited.jpg

Between exits, there is US 301 reassurance. (6-4-2025)

IMG_3981_edited.jpg

The highway settles into a due south orientation for now. (6-4-2025)

IMG_3982_edited.jpg

At mile marker 8, the highway crosses over Boyds Corner Road (Delaware Route 896). (6-4-2025)

IMG_3983_edited.jpg

Another wide curve to the right follows. (6-4-2025)

IMG_3984_edited.jpg

Drawyer Creek, an Appoquinimink River tributary, is then crossed. (6-4-2025)

IMG_3985_edited.jpg

One mile away, exit 5 intersects (indirectly) Delaware Route 71 and serves North Middletown. (6-4-2025)

IMG_3986_edited.jpg

Wawa has a store off this exit at DE 71 and Armstrong Corner. (6-4-2025)

IMG_3988_edited.jpg

About ¼ mile prior to exit 5, US 301 crosses over DE 71 itself. (6-4-2025)

IMG_3989_edited.jpg

Exit 5 lies at the beginning of a lefthand curve. (6-4-2025)

IMG_3990.JPEG

The highway then goes over the DE 71 connector. (6-4-2025)

IMG_3991_edited.jpg

US 301 receives traffic from DE 71 at right before crossing Marl Pit Road. (6-4-2025)

IMG_3994_edited.jpg

A pair of curves, one right and one left, follows exit 5. (6-4-2025)

IMG_3996_edited.jpg

Soon, services available at exit 2, beginning with lodging, begin to be posted. (6-4-2025)

IMG_3997_edited.jpg

Located one mile away, exit 2 intersects Delaware Route 299, which runs between South Middletown and Townsend. (6-4-2025)

IMG_3998_edited.jpg

At the Bunker Hill Road overpass, US 301 momentarily leaves Middletown city limits. (6-4-2025)

IMG_3999_edited.jpg

Located off exit 2 is a Royal Farms station. (6-4-2025)

IMG_4001_edited.jpg

Across the state line, no trucks over 13 tons are permitted along Maryland Route 282, which passes through the small town of Warwick. (6-4-2025)

IMG_4002_edited.jpg

Exit 2 sits just ahead. Access to Townsend from DE 299 is actually by way of southbound DE 71; DE 299 itself goes east beyond Middletown to Odessa, where it meets US 13 and DE 1. (6-4-2025)

IMG_4004_edited.jpg

After crossing Marsh Run, US 301 passes under DE 299. DE 299 is numbered as a continuation of MD 299, but the route it actually becomes past the state line is MD 282. (6-4-2025)

IMG_4006_edited.jpg

Exit 2 is followed by US 301 reassurance. As a result of the construction of the toll road, DE 299, which used to overlap with US 301 here, now runs parallel to it for about a mile. (6-4-2025)

IMG_4007_edited.jpg

As US 301 leaves Middletown for good, a $4 toll awaits drivers before they leave Delaware for Maryland. (6-4-2025)

IMG_4008_edited.jpg

Cash is not taken here; the payment options are E-ZPass or video tolling, where drivers get a bill in the mail. (6-4-2025)

IMG_4009.JPEG

The toll scanners are located here, set up so that drivers do not have to stop or ever reduce their speed when they go through them. (6-4-2025)

IMG_4011_edited.jpg

The final US 301 reassurance shield in Delaware is on the right. By now, DE 299 has curved away from US 301 to the west. (6-4-2025)

IMG_4013_edited.jpg

Strawberry Lane (left) and Wilson Street (right) then pass overhead; the different street names are a vestige of when this was an at-grade intersection. (6-4-2025)

IMG_4014_edited.jpg

The speed limit drops to 55 miles per hour up ahead. (6-4-2025)

IMG_4015_edited.jpg

This marks US 301's entry into Maryland, where it will cut the southeast corner of Cecil County before making its way over the Sassafras River into Kent County. (6-4-2025)
