DE 404/US 13 shield assemblies are then places on both sides of the southbound carriageway at mile marker 21. The presumed reason for DE 404 being on top, despite US 13 being the through route of this corridor, is that the combination of MD and DE 404 represents the main east-west drag between Maryland's mid-Eastern Shore (and, broadly, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge) and Delaware's main beaches: Lewes, Dewey Beach and Rehoboth Beach.
