U.S. Route 1 south - Philadelphia to Maryland line

U.S. Route 1 (Baltimore Pike) is in Chadds Ford, Delaware County, Pennsylvania as southbound traffic on it puts the route's intersection with U.S. Route 202/322 (Wilmington Pike) behind it. The route now finds itself crossing Brandywine Creek. A tributary of the Delaware River via the Christina River, the Brandywine flows directly through downtown Wilmington, Delaware and splits into two separate branches, West and East, just upstream of Lenape, Pocopson Township to the north of here. Solo again, US 1 bears four southbound lanes (three through, one exit) as it curves left and nears the renowned Longwood Gardens, consisting of meadows, fountains, pavilions and trails. Photo taken 10-09-2025.

Access to Longwood Gardens from US 1 is through an interchange where the southbound movement is a sweeping righthand ramp, and the northbound ramp is a cloverleaf. Only the northbound exit leads straight onto US 1. Photo taken 10-09-2025.

Longwood Road, off of which the entrance to the gardens is, crosses US 1 using this stone bridge. Longwood Road then turns left, running along the south edge of the gardens and beyond, toward the Kennett Square Golf and Country Club. US 1 is now a freeway, the Kennett Oxford Bypass, and will spend its remaining 22 miles in Pennsylvania this way. The borough of Oxford is 16 miles away, while the town of Rising Sun, Maryland is 24 miles to the south. Photo taken 10-09-2025.
