U.S. Route 301 parallels Interstate 95 from the North Carolina line through Virginia's Southside and the city of Petersburg, then leaves the corridor in Richmond and turns northeast at Bowling Green, eventually crossing the Potomac River into Maryland. Between Petersburg and Richmond it runs concurrent with U.S. Route 1.
