Stretching from the Atlantic Ocean in the southeast to lakes Erie and Ontario in the west and north, the state of New York lies along the U.S. East Coast. It is the location of New York City, the largest city in America, which lies in the state's far-southeast across five boroughs. New York City is culturally distinct from the rest of the state, especially since it lies within the Northeast megalopolis whereas much of the rest of the state is tucked away inland. NYC's population of 8 million still contributes largely to the state's overall population of 19 million, the fourth-highest in the U.S.

New York has two separate designated portions of Upstate and Downstate. It is bounded by New Jersey to the southwest, Pennsylvania to the south, the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec to the northwest and north, and Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut to the east. Long Island, the most densely-populated island in America, protrudes out into the east, forming much of the eastern portion of greater NYC; the city's boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens are located on it. The Hudson River, which discharges into the Upper New York Bay beside the southern tip of NYC borough Manhattan, runs along the eastern third of the state into the Adirondack Mountains in the north, forming the state's Hudson Valley. The Shawangunk mountain range stretches across the state's south-central portion. Albany, the state capital, along with Poughkeepsie and Yonkers are located along the Hudson, while Buffalo just across the Canadian border, and Syracuse and Rochester are the largest cities in the state's west. Lake Placid in the Adirondacks was the host of the 1980 Winter Olympics and the U.S. men's hockey team's Miracle on Ice.

Attractions in New York City include the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Central Park, One World Trade Center, the Chrysler Building, Rockefeller Plaza, Times Square, and the Metropolitan Gallery of Art - all located in Manhattan, regarded by some as the cultural and financial capital of the world, let alone the U.S. The borough of Brooklyn holds the beaches of Coney Island and Brighton Beach along with Highland and Prospect parks, and the Bronx is hpme to the Bronx Zoo and the current and former iterations of Yankee Stadium. Both of NYC's major airports, John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia, are in Queens. On Long Island, the village of Elmont on the Queens border contains Belmont Park, which host the final leg of horse racing's Triple Crown every year, while Jones Beach sits along a barrier island along the Atlantic Ocean. On far-east Long Island, Montauk is a quiet town situated along Long Island Sound.

Western New York contains attractions like Cooperstown's Baseball Hall of Fame, the Finger Lakes, motor racing's Watkins Glen International, and ski resorts in Chautauqua County. Far upstate are the Adirondack National Forest and the Fort Drum Army reservation in Watertown. Just northwest of Buffalo is the cross-border agglomeration of Niagara Falls, which it shares with Canada; the two nations are connected by the Peace Bridge which crosses the strait connecting lakes Erie and Ontario.
