D.C. Route 295 south

At the south end of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway near Cheverly, Maryland, what will soon become D.C. Route 295 crosses over U.S. Route 50. The official route designation for the time being is Maryland Route 201, Kenilworth Avenue. Photo taken 07-14-2025.

The highway crosses Beaverdam Creek, followed by Amtrak's Northeast Corridor. Photo taken 07-14-2025.

Four miles from the highway's transition into Interstate 295, it has a southbound exit ramp to Eastern Avenue, which forms part of the Maryland/D.C. border and leads to the Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens. Photo taken 07-14-2025.

Kenilworth Avenue proper, which begins in Maryland in the Greenbelt area, continues into the District as a one-way pair along either side of DC 295 beginning at Eastern Avenue. Photo taken 07-14-2025.

The highway enters the District, becoming the Kenilworth Avenue Freeway, and DC 295 officially begins. Photo taken 07-14-2025.

The Benning/Foote exit sign makes mention of the soon to be demolished RFK Stadium, which Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris and GM Adam Peters made a tentative deal with the D.C. Council in 2025 to replace with a new stadium, replacing Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland. Photo taken 07-14-2025.

A CSX rail line then passes overhead. Photo taken 07-14-2025.

The Orange Line of the Washington Metro, which has been paralleling the highway for a mile or so, flies overhead in the distance. The line's Minnesota Avenue station is just behind this photo. Photo taken 07-14-2025.

Before the Pennsylvania Avenue exit, mile markers begin appearing along the freeway, which will continue after it becomes I-295. Photo taken 07-14-2025.

DC 295 reaches Pennsylvania Avenue half a mile before it meets Interstate 695, the link between it and I-395. Photo taken 07-14-2025.

At right, the highway collects traffic from eastbound Pennsylvania Avenue. Unlike DC 295 south, DC 295 north has access to westbound Pennsylvania Avenue, including the John Philip Sousa Bridge over the Anacostia. Photo taken 07-14-2025.

Two separate exits, one off I-295 and one off I-695, can be taken to Nationals Park, the home of Major League Baseball's Washington Nationals. It opened in 2008 after the team spent three seasons playing at RFK. Photo taken 07-14-2025.

At the I-695 split, the through movement onto I-295 south is itself designated as an exit, 1A. Photo taken 07-14-2025.

I-695 provides access to MLK Jr. Avenue and 11th Street, as well as Anacostia Park. Photo taken 07-14-2025.

A short distance ahead, the Metro Green Line's Anacostia station can be reached from exit 4 of I-295. Photo taken 07-14-2025.

The I-695 junction is now reached, and DC 295 gives way to I-295, which will wind its way through southeast D.C. to Maryland's National Harbor and the Capital Beltway. Photo taken 07-14-2025.
